Hampi is the capital of the medieval empire of Vijayanagar. Literally, the city of victory, on the bank of river Pampa, now called Tungabhadra, Hampi is also known as Pampapattanam.
Scattered with monuments in every corner of the area, it has been destroyed by the invading Deccan Sultans after the disastrous Battle of Talikota.
